Default Software to check health of motherboard/videocard/power supply?

Hi all,

Just looking for some good utilities to check the health of a motherboard, videocard and power supply (I realize that they may all require different utilities). I think that one of the three is a dud in my friend's computer, but haven't had to deal with those specific components dying/being faulty before.

Any suggestions most appreciated -- freeware in particular!

Cheers

Damn...I don't even know if any utilities will help at this point. I had BartPE running on it, since XP won't recognize my mouse or keyboard (even in Safe Mode), but then the mouse started getting glitchy so I went to restart it and the thing sounds like it is turning on...checks to see if a CD is in there, etc. However, nothing shows up on the monitor, and the optical mouse and keyboard -- both of which should light up -- remain dark.

Does this sound like an overheated CPU issue maybe? That's the only thing that comes to mind...

This is a whole can of worms by the sounds of it.
It would be impossible to tell whats wrong without having it on hand.
Does it still show the POST or boot screens?

Time to be a really good friend and swap in your own PSU/vid card to see if you can isolate the problem......

Nope the monitor light stays on standby, though it sounds like it is POSTing and whatnot. No error beeps or anything.

As for popping in my own videocard, I wish I could but it is AGP and the board has just PCI-E. Not sure if my power supply will fit in the case, but thinking of just buying a cheap one to see if it makes a difference...I'm betting when I get home from work it will turn on, which leads me to think it's a CPU overheat or maybe a VPU overheat?

Thanks for the input so far!
