Default Does anyone now how to fix..............?

Okay Guys,

You are my last hope before we throw it the garbage.

Does anyone have any idea idea how repair a US Robotics V.92 56K External Fax Modem Model 5686?
Or even be able to test it to see if it works. My husband has tried various times to get to work with our computer but its been a no go. So, he figures that the device is a dud.

Which will suck because I think he paid like $35 Cdn for it off eBay.

Any help at all would be appreciated.

Thanks!

make sure that you have the right drivers I see SOOOOO many people install the incorrect drivers dont go by the chip go by the white sticker usually on the back to give you its exact model # then google the driver.

hi. Jim here.

The computer isn't regonizing that there is anything connected to it on port com1. I thought that if i connected the modem to the computer with the cable (a bd25 male to male) i bought at RadioShack at least a message would popup saying windows has detected new hardware. However, its not. I went through device manager to check to see if the ports are active and its saying that the are. I don't know whats going on.

Was there a specific reason you are trying to use an external one?

Thanks...

Perhaps you are connecting it incorrectly.
I believe you require a specific cable, not just any ol' db25/db15.
In fact, what you require may be called a "null modem" cable.
It has been some 10 years since I had to use such a beast though, so maybe I'm out of touch with such things.
Try googling null modem cable and external modem.

A male to male cable? That's not right, the serial port on the PC should be male, thus requiring a female to male cable - no null modem required. You're not plugging it into the parallel port are you?
