creating back-up disks for vista
Im buying a new pc (hopefully today)
it doesnt come with a copy of Vista (the OS on the machine)
how do i make backup disks if I need to repair my pc? (reformat etc)
what do i need? software? etc.
I was offered a price of 100bux to have it done for me, but im not sure if its better for me to do it
or have someone else get it done.
sorry if this is a double post.

Just download an ISO image of the Vista DVD of whatever version your computer comes with. Technically you have a license for it, so it's not illegal to download the copy of the DVD.
Edit: Well, it's perhaps a blurry line. I'm not sure if it'd be illegal to download the copy, but you certainly wouldn't be pirating it, since for you it would technically be a backup copy.

Considering you can pick up a legal OEM copy of Visa Home Premium for $135, $100 to backup the OS that's already on it seems a bit steep....
Is this a new computer, or is it a used one with a hacked version of Vista?
If it is a new one, and comes shipped with the OS pre-installed (Like HP, Compac, Acer etc.......) there will be an icon (or start menu program) which will allow you to make a one time copy to DVDs / CDROMS. The documentation will tell you how many disks you will need to make the image.

And ISO image is a file which essentially contains all the files that would be on a given CD or DVD (think zip file). You can use certain programs (Nero, Alcohol 120%, many more) to burn these files to create a duplicate of a CD or DVD.
Also, try the method sswilson mentioned. If that doesn't work, you can also try calling your manufacturer and asking for a backup disk. If you talk to them nicely, they may send you a disk for free, or they may charge you for it (probably $10 or so).

its preinstalled, with no cds.
if there is an icon thats perfect, i will do it myself.
its a brand new pc, not hacked etc.
to be honest id much rather run windows xp vs vista.
where it comes preinstalled with vista, can i copy it, then perhaps reformat it with xp instead??
i wonder if that voids any warranty the pc may have.

I doubt it would void you warranty, but your Vista license won't work with XP, and I doubt they'd just give you an XP license,. So you'd have to buy it, use a copy you already own, or pirate it..
