Default psu problem

so i just put my pc in a new case, and when i pressed the power button, i got smoke and a burning smell, the burning was coming from the power supply, but i cant really tell if the motherboard was burning too, the power supply still turns on, but i get no post or anything on the monitor, i also now get a beep code that tells me my ram is bad, so i dont know if the motherboard is fried as well, because i think it just screwed my ram. to make this worse i just got my new cpu and mobo, like 2 days ago. if it screwed my ram, is that a sign that the mobo fried and is there a chance my hard drives took any damage?

Is the power supply new? Or was it with the system to begin with, and you just put it in a new case?

Another note, if your power supply fails or shows signs of failure like that, DO NOT TRY TO TURN IT ON AGAIN!!! That can cause even more damage to other parts of your system very quickly due to the high possibility of unregulated voltages from a dead regulator or MOSFET.

Where did you observe the smoke coming from? The exhaust of the power supply? Or somewhere else? Are there any physical signs of component damage on the motherboard/CPU/RAM? Charring on any PCBs?

it was an old 450 watt power supply, and a case i just got. the smoke came from the exhaust of the power supply. i didnt see any problems on any of the other components, and when i did turn it back on (my bad) everything seems to boot fine, but no power to the monitor

So your monitor just stays in it's idle state?

Hmm, well, my suggestion would be to try and source a new power supply and try that. If you still can't get any video, then you've got a problem with one of your components. Try a PCI Video card? If you're still getting the beep code for bad RAM, try swapping slots, or only using one stick.

There's really no way to verify that your HDD didn't take any damage unless you get your system up and running, or you put it in another machine to test.

EDIT: Actually, come to think of it, a friend of mine had a similar problem with an older P3 system. We went through everything we could think of to fix it. In the end, we took out, then reinstalled the processor, and everything was fine after that.

ok, i know one stick of ram is bad, i dont get the beep with the other one. i can hear the hard drive boot up as normal, the power supply would come on for about 20 seconds, then shut off and start again. i only have one video card, ive tried the onboard video, same problem, i wont have another power supply till tomorrow to try that, its amazing i just got home from selling my second system when this broke, 2 hours earlier and i would have multiple everything to test, but now i have nothing, so i will get the power supply tomorrow and try that, then i will let you know how i make out, thanks for the help though, its much appreciated, and if the motherboard is fried, i hope warrenty covers it, i bought it from rednecktech 2 days ago, lol
