Default Opinions..CPU or Motherboard

Hey guys... looking for some outside opinions diagnosing a machine....
My first thought was the PS, but after picking up one... the problem persisted....
So here goes....

It's a Gigabyte board, GA-8IG1000MK,
http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/...e=GA-8IG1000MK
1. North Bridge : Intel® 865G GMCH
2. Intel® 82801EB
3. Intel® EP82562G Ethernet Controller
4. Super I/O: ITE I/O IT8712F chip
5. Realtek ALC655 CODEC
6. 3M bit flash ROM

CPU is a P4 2.4 gig

Problem is no post, (though I did get it co come up a couple of times, then it stopped)
I thought it was the PS because there is no power going to the drives at all, no eject buttons will work, HD not spinning.
The few times I got it to post, it then kicked in power to the drives...(is this a feature on the newer intel boards?, haven't worked on them much)

Anyways, LED for the DIMMs is working, all fans spinning ... no POST at all (other than the few times)
I'm thinking motherboard as the heatsink on the MB chipset becomes VERY!!! (read ouch that hurts) HOT.

Does anyone have the same board or similar and can check the temp of the heatsink for the chipset?

Thoughts?

Thanks

Single stick of 256, tried a known working stick of 512, same result.
(note: machine was running fine, then this, not a fresh build)

Weird.

My first thought was the power supply, but you already replaced that.

My second thought was a bad stick of ram or 2 sticks arguing with each other, but again you have covered that too.

The only other time I've experienced this type of no-post/semi-post problem I fixed it by removing all the PCI cards and ram and cleaned the pins with a Qtip and rubbing alcohol. The thing was there, I had changed a few things and swapped out to a new case and things needed cleaning. So being as yours was running fine and then dropped I don't see that being the problem.

I have had bad experiences with Gigabyte boards, but that doesn't mean it's the problem in your case.

Maybe RNT will have some insight.

I'd say it's the motherboard. I presume you've:

Cleared the BIOS
Tried the motherboard out of the case
Checked for bulging/leaky capacitors

did you have it overclocked? If so it could be the cpu.. but i agree, its most likely that mobo.

Yep, had checked, no leaky/bulging caps, removed battery to clear CMOS, and tried the board out of case (in case of a short)
Otherwise only onter card is an AGP vid card, tried with and without....
Not my machine, but it wasn't overclocked, owner is a barebones user, e-mail, msn whatnot...

Main reason I think MB is the heatsink for the chipset getting so hot, but I don't have a reference as I haven't worked on many 478 boards (and all my systems are AMD :-) ), none with a similar issue... but a dead/dying CPU could also give the same result...

Thanks for the input guys, guess you can see why I'm stumped on this one..

take off the chipset cooler and see if the think is physically burnt out. May sound dum, but it does happen haha

865P based boards didn't get that hot as I remember. I have seen the heatsinks used on their NB's shift and crush other discrete components on the chipset though.

Great.... guess I need to track down a board and CPU to test these theories.... dammit this was supposed to be a quick fix.... though... due to the heat thing.. I'm leaning towards MB still......
Don't suppose anyone's got one for sale? hehe :-)
