Default Installing ubuntu + beryl.. no experience

im installing ubuntu with beryl, as ive heard great things about this combonation, but ive never used a linux desktop EVER. Linux is a nerd os... the nerd os haha, so im inferring windows apps can be configured to work on it too? Also, can you play microsoft games on linux? And if so will they run well? Haha im all new to this, don't make fun

Tony

Most Windows apps won't work with wine, and getting the few that will set up is such a chore that it's probably not even worth it anyway.

Beryl is great, but a pain to set up with an ATI card. AIGLX is officially unsupported by ATI cards, and so you'll need to use XGL instead, which isn't really a big deal, just make sure you follow a guide for XGL not AIGLX.

Haha, im actually a nVidia guy too, i prefer there cards, despite there bad driver support haha. At the time I got this card, I was pretty desprate, and greg gave me a wicked deal that i couldn't refuse. Im happy with it, but a higher nVidia 6 or 7 series card would be nice

I'm have no real preference, whatever card performs best is what I want. However, I must say, ATI's linux support is awful. I went through three different versions of drivers before one of them finally worked.

If you are in linux, you could always run windows in a virtual machine (vmware)

I had ubuntu running with beryl quite easily on an ati card. There is alot of great help out there for getting it set up, and once you do, you generally have a much better understanding of ubuntu. I think I had a clean install of ubuntu with beryl up and going in a night, and this is with only a couple weeks experiance in linux.

However wine is a bitch to set up and if the only reason that you want to get windows apps to work is for games, there are some other alternatives out there, however they may cost a few dollars.
