Possibly Upgrading and Need Advise
I want to know if this is a worthy upgrade, if an upgrade at all.
I currently have:
Pentium 4, 2.8GHz, 533FSB, 478pin
ASRock Micro ATX Mainboard
2x 512MB DDR400 Ram
Radeon 9550 128MB AGP
I want to upgrade to this:
AMD Athlon64 3200+ s939
MSI K8N Neo4 Mainboard
GeForce 6200tc, 128MB PCI-E
2x 512MB DDR400 Ram(the same)
I've never owned an AMD system, I've always had Intel, so I don't know much about them, and I'm nervious because I've always had good luck with my intel systems, and I hear bad things about AMD. Please don't suggest a different Mainboard, or CPU as I already have this stuff ready to put in.
Dave

Processor wise it's an upgrade. That 6200TC though If you haven't already got it, go with a 7300GT at least (maybe an old 6600GT, 6800GT/GS)
Make sure you have a floppy drive handy. (haven't seen a single A64/X2 system that would use a darn USB key for the RAID drivers)

changing to AM2 would keep prices same, youd just need DDR2 not DDR and AM2 is newer
I got my
Athlon-64 3500+ AM2
MSI K9N Neo4-F AM2
for the same price as it as s939 set (MSI K8N Neo4-F, Athlon-64 3500+ s939)
EDIT: Just saw your thing about not suggesting different, jsut dif socket tho.
I also havent had a AMD (this was first) and came out VERY good. But from everything some C2D's rape Athlon-64 X2 5000+ (highest Athlon)

It'd be a decent upgrade for you, you'd see a little better performance but even better you'd be set for future upgrades. You can slap a dual core processor on that board anytime and upgrade to a higher end PCIe vid card as well. I'd do it up if I were you

Thanks everyone,
Basically, I was sitting on the 939 MB/CPU and VC that I was going to build a system out of, but then got to thinking it might be a good time for me to try AMD. I'm gonna do it up like G said
As for the video card, it was part of the package, I can upgrade later but for now, is it not as good as my Radeon 9550?? If the wife can't play Sims 2 I'll be in serious trouble!!
The machine is basically used for heavy internet usage all while running windows media player or winamp playing MP3's all day, MSN and other various programs at the same time. It needs to multask without delay, and my Intel can handle that now, but I'm sure the AMD will do fine. As for games, we really only play adventure games, like syberia for example, I'm not into the war/killing games, so real high performance graphics isn't a big necessity.

I see in your sig you have similar systems that I'm going from - to, do you have any complaints on the AMD vs. P4? The AMD does run a lower MHz, but it has more FSB, and it's 64bit.... i guess I won't know till I just try it!
I also notice I made a mistake - the s939 CPU I have is an Athlon64 3500+, I see I marked in 3200 by mistake.

The Athlon should outperform the P4 all around, the 3500+ rating implies that it should perform similar to a Pentium4 @ 3.5ghz, you'll get a considerable boost in gaming power as well since the P4's weren't great in that department. As for the video card, if you look at this chart: http://www.overclock.net/graphics-ca...kings-2-a.html you'll see the 6200 is rated a little better than the 9550 so combined with the Athlon64's better gaming performance you should see a boost.

It WOULD out perform my old P4 2.6ghz/HT 478, But the x1300 video card hold it back.
I also called my 3500+, 3200+ for a little bit LoL. Believe it was cuz the old ram i had was PC3200 tho.
But anything that doesnt require my Video card ,it outperfrems it. But limited by the HDD speed (Old HDD) lol my Video and HDD are the only problems I got.

Well, I'm actually making a POS pc for a store out of that P4, so it's not available
I did the swap on Saturday night with a fresh Windows install on a new HD!! I am impressed with the system, it's quick, and very quiet because of the new PSU with Noise reduction, I can barly hear it going at night(I had to change PSU's due to the 24 pin connector) I didn't want to give up my Antec for a generic, but it's done now, I will upgrade the PSU to something better when more cash comes my way. I'd also like to get a better Heatsink/fan, maybe something flashy for my window case
Thanks for all the input
Dave
