Default asus p5b question

anyone with this board able to get ahci/raid working properly?

if i plug my sata hd into the intel ich8 ports, windows xp doesn't boot unless i set them to IDE (as opposed to AHCI in bios), and when i have it plugged into the one jmicron port, i also have to set the port to IDE (as opposed to AHCI/RAID) to get windows xp to recognize everything properly (and notice my dvd drive). i've found a million and one threads about this problem with this board and nobody can get it to work with their sata drives at full speed (in winxp) which is more than a little frustrating.

even the asus driver disk has the wrong ahci controllers (they're for the ich8-r, which is what the p5b deluxe has [this non-deluxe board is just ich8]) which is pretty bad. any help would be appreciated.

on the plain p5b there is no stated raid support at all. http://www.asus.com/products4.aspx?l...&modelm enu=1
the same is true for the p5b-v and the p5b-ve. all other p5b series motherboards have raid support to some degree or another.

That seems to depend on where you view it at...

Sorry to hear about your troubles Morgan. On the website it states the board supports Raid 0, 1 via 1 external and 1 internal port. I'll try to do some research on it for you to see what's up with the AHCI settings

the only way to get raid on the go (it IS mentioned in the manual, regardless of what the internet says) is to use the one internal jmicron port and the external sata port together, but that's really bizarre. i just want AHCI instead of IDE so i can take full advantage of my sata-ii drive. last night i installed windows vista x64 and before i began the installation i switched over to the intel sata port and set it to AHCI in bios and vista installed without a hitch. it does suck, however, that for the next couple of months while i wait for vista to work with everything i use that i will have to switch something back and forth in bios to boot the different systems. seems like a lot of folks online are pissed about this.
