What's the best cpu silencer?
I've got a amd 64 3500 on a MSI K8N Neo4. The current fan is sounding like a buzzsaw. Any suggestions on quiet cooling? I want something under 20 db. A friend recommended this: click

ps - it's in an aerocool masstige case - Steve R's old rig.

There's a ton of good ones, not sure that there is any "best" one. If you want really good cooling as well as quiet that would narrow it down a bit but most any of the non oem coolers will provide better cooling so it'd be all good. The Zalman 7700ALcu's are fairly cheap and quiet. An Arctic freezer is pretty quiet and really cheap.
But I have to ask do you know it's your cpu fan? AMD stock fans are pretty darn quiet so wondering if it might be your chipset fan making all the noise? They spin up at over 7K rpm on those MSI boards and when they start to go get really noisy.

in addition to what rednecktech said it could also be the video card fan making all the noise. that's assuming your video card has a fan.

I've installed 3 thermalright Ultra 120's in the past month and they are the best! And.... they are pushing painfully close to $100 when all is said and done with a good fan. I used a SilenX 120mm fan on mine, lowest noise to cfm ratio on the globe they say....

I got a Artic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro on my 3700+ and it works great.. quiet as well, I think RNT is more on the solution to your problem though.. chipset fans are crazy loud when dirty .. remember the Epox motherboard k8Ha+ .. they were very bad for it..
If it is the chipset.. you may want to look at a Zalman ZM-NB47J fanless cooling. (if you need one PM me.. i got some here as I sold a bunch of Epox motherboards and replaced most of them with the Zm-NB47J's

thanks for the advice everyone. I'll double check which fan is the culprit.
I think there are about 10 fans in my case. (one on the x850xt, 5 on the case, cpu, and PS...yikes)
If it is the cpu fan, I don't overclock, so priority is on the low sound level.
I'm also only looking to spend $50 tops.

D'oh!! It's the chipset fan which is causing all the noise.
(The fan towards the lower left in this image.)
The end of my video card is obstructing the fan, so I can't replace it with anything higher.
Not sure what to do - but man, this fan is LOUD. I blassted it with compressed air - and no change.
Are there bearings I can clean? Any way to lub it?
thanks again
(dead on RNT!)
here's a closeup:

Vantec CCB-A1C might fit
Zalman NB32, NB47 or NBF47 for passive
(measure the distance between the retension pins, around 35mm you need the NB32, around 50mm you need a NB47, NBF47 or CCB-A1C

You might be able to temporarily quiet it down if you pull the retaining screws, there "should" be a decal on the back side that also acts as a seal for the bearings. Peel it off and add a drop of oil then make sure you reseal it again to keep the dirt out of

thanks again.
a friend suggested that i get a passive heatsink and snip off the prongs that would be blocked by the pci-e video card.
here's the thing he's recommending: http://www.mysterybyte.com/index.htm...e=sidepart.htm
(Zalman ZM-NB32J Fanless Northbridge Chipset Cooler)
I'm not that much of a techie, so the simplest solution (and quietest) is the best.
I will check out the alternatives suggested though - thanks
mike
