DNR (Dept of Natural Resources) has 25 FREE shooting ranges throughout the province provided by our tax Dollars and voters, open 6 days a week (with the exception of Sundays) and all year round with the busiest times being Sept, Oct, Nov & Dec as many hunters sight in their rifles "but" anyone can go with someone who has a valid driver's licence and shoot any firearm except the Magnum rifles and .50 cal BMG.
The ranges are outdoors, have benches/picnic tables 100 meters away and 200 meters away from the target/backstop. You bring your own paper targets, cans, vcrs, dvd players, etc and clean up after you including the empty cases and/or shells which local recycling bottle & can depots give $3/lb or so for brass, copper & steel. You can also skeet/trap shoot with clay targets being biodegradable (of course) and can be purchased at Canadian Tire & Wal*Mart. Canadian Tire & Wal*Mart both sell 12 gauge and 20 gauge bulk packs (one box) of quantity 100 shells/box for only $26+tx.They also sell .22LR rimfire bulk packs of quantity 500-525 bullets for only $17+tx.
The ranges are booked over the phone (for a standard of one hour but if you speak to a nice tech they will let you book them for more) by providing the following your:

DNR wildlife techs (game wardens, DNR/conservation officers, wildlife tech, fish cops) don't ask for FAC/PAL or POL, firearms registration certificate or driver's licence because DNR is provincial while the above is federal "but" if you get pulled over by police you better have them as it's their territory.
The DNR ranges are administered by the Dept Of Justice as their policy for the ranges is you must have someone with you in case their is an accident, that persons doesn't not require an FAC/PAL or POL but can shoot under your direct supervision like stated in the Firearm's ACT. Before using the ranges follow the regulations posted there like raising a red flag before firing and such, again you must have someone with you that person only needs a valid driver's licence.
The ranges allow bows, crossbows, pellet/BB guns, shotguns, rifles (both rimfire & centerfire) and restricted guns like handguns/revolvers and AR-15s (CFO office- Chief Firearms Office in Halifax will issue ATT permits to transport) as stated at the top of the links I provided below:

The closest one to Dartmouth/Halifax is in West Jeddore Rd and can be booked by calling 889-2332. You can also talk to farmers in Musquodoboit Harbour, Brooklyn, Windsor, Truro, etc and ask them if they want their coyote population controlled. You would be doing many farmers favours.
