As for the trouble with Iams? There was a massive recall on foods, because there was a poison in it and it was killing animals.
Iams is a low quality food made of low quality ingredients. It contains rancid meat, rancid fats, and items that are not generally easy to digest, such as corn and grains.
Check out this site to see where your dog food ends up. http://www.dogfoodproject.com/
I have used Pedigree in the past, I refuse to use Iams, Eukanuba, or Ol' Roy. I've also made my own dog food and overall prefer to feed RAW meats to my dogs. My kibble of choice is Canidae, or Wellness. Innova EVO is an excellent food as well, all are made with human grade ingredients.

I'm not trying to generate business for Pedigree its just a product I like. It works extremely well for my dogs.
As for Iams being a low quality food, that would be your opinion, however, I am currently getting ready to whelp my 3rd litter on my own, and have assisted in several others with my parents and from past experience feeding pregnant dogs Iams puppy, has produced beautiful healthy puppies, that are all whelped naturally with no problems.
But hey, it all comes down to personal choice, if I thought feeding the raw diet would make any big difference in my dogs, than I might try it, but for now I'm happy and my dogs are happy with their supper.

Wellllllllllllllll, it's not really my opinion... if a food contains by products as a main protein source, that don't digest well in an animal's digestive tract, or that shouldn't be in an animal's diet because they themselves weren't created to eat that particular food, then it's substandard. Anything with corn as an ingredient doesn't generally get into my dogs, simply because corn does not digest.
Yes, dogs can and will eat these foods. Yes, dogs can and some have done well on them as well. But if you never try something better, how do you know that they couldn't be doing that much better?
Regardless... I'm not going to continue to preach to the choir, I don't like Iams, and I've said why.
