buying from ebay
i've only bought a few things off of e bay and they were not very expensive items and they all came from US. Now i was thinking of buying some things for the kids that are hard to locate here but lots in Asia, and i also was thinking of buying more expensive stuff form the US. My question is, how can i find out how much i will have to pay on duty is customs decide to charge me it??

14% of the "Value" of the item(s).
if your product is has a drastically reduced value on the customs declaration, 80% of the time they will charge you tax on that amount.
There are the times when they will open it and inspect it, judge the condition and based on used or retail value on the item will tax you on that.
Use USPS when shipping from U.S to Canada as they do not have a brokerage company that deals with that stuff, it will come direct without any third party invlovment and brokerage fee's.
Good Luck!

I've purchased alot of items off ebay, some over three hundred dollars, just ask the seller if they wouldn't mind checking the customs tag as a gift and if they can place a value under $60.00 on the item, then you dont have to pay any duty or taxes but make sure they dont ship via UPS, they rip people off all the time with their brokerage fees.

like Solutions said use USPS .. United States POstal Service.. not UPS or FedEX as you will get a big customs fee like 60 or more $$ depending on price of item it can acutally cost you more for the fees then the item and shipping.

Its funny.. I just bought a new Sony T20 8.1MP Digi cam from one of my wholesale suppliers 2 days ago and I asked him to send anything but UPS and FedEx, he couldn't do so as his shipping account and agents are with UPS.
So I paid $160.00 for this camera and UPS just called me this morning. They are charging me $21.00 for tax and 46.00 for the Brokerage fee for UPS.
Exactly why you don't EVER want to use UPS for cross border shipments!!!!!

and what's with the shipping charges. they most likely put in for their time but $9 to ship something and you get it, it has 90 cents of postage on it.
