Yeah the big problem with those refurbs is the 90 day warranty, try to rma the hard drive or anything afterwards, the manufacturer will refuse. With a custom built system you get a 1yr warranty on some parts, 3 yrs on most and 5 yrs on some

Yep, and when I'm building my own I do piece by piece.
OTOH, after pricing a complete low-end build earlier this year I've come to the conclusion that folks who just need a basic computer at a decent price are better served with a "gasp!!!!!" pre-built big box computer.
It comes down to the OS..... no matter how many different ways I tried to build the system I always came up short by at least what it would cost to purchase a legal OS, and in fact even without the OS factored in I came up with big box brands being slightly cheaper due to economics of scale.

And thus my statement..... "It would cost you $450 - $500 to build new without an OS"
There was no need to call me a liar (or insult my intellegence).
I backed up my statement.... care to back up yours that it wouldn't cost that much to build new?

i did not intend to insult your intelligence sir, but first, i was referring to replacing a refurb unit, which means used parts, so give me $500 and i will come away with a system that will surpass the system in question, and give you back change.....trust me, look at the price of used systems on here, $500 goes a long way......my question would be...why new?

one more thing.....ever notice how computer's round here priced $400 and up seem to stick around for awhile.....thats because peeps in here are well informed about this market and decide if they are shelling out that kind of dough, they are going to get what they want. Dont fall victim over-inflated last years prices......do research.

ken, do yourself a favor, if you plan to buy new, dont buy last years technology, speak to rnt.....otherwise, buy used and you will see similar systems at $350-$400 used...do not pay close to $600 for something that will be worth half that in 6 months.....look ahead....if you have 600 bucks to blow, invest another $100 or so and get current shit.....i would never pay that much for something that in 6 months you will be putting more money into...my last 2 cents.

Wow... didn't realize the current low prices on gear...
I've already contacted RNT about a build so hopefully he'll be getting back to me soon...
Thanx for all the great advice.
