Anyone else using a draught setup at home?
My current setup consists of an old deep freeze plugged into a timer, the freezer runs for 30mins 4 cycles per day and maintains the beer at a fairly consistent ~ 33F. I have the CO2 system inside the freezer as well, it holds a 20lb CO2 tank and 3 x 20L kegs. For the faucet setup I drilled a large hole through the top of the freezer and mounted a mottled ceramic DAB tower, I haven't bothered installing a drip tray, I just use bar towels. The freezer itself isn't the prettiest thing but I'm working on it, it's a simple, easy and cost effective setup. Here's a couple shots of it: ![]() ![]() ![]()

Nice job!
This is sort of why I got out of making beer. I had been bottling, which was way too time consuming, but never had the time to setup a proper system like this. I've always like this guy's setup: http://www.bodensatz.com/index.php Alan is actually from Nova Scotia - he used to work at Acadia, but now lives in Ottawa. |

Thanks, it's not very fancy but it works great
That's a great site, quite a few locals from the beer club use it. Some of them have pretty impressive setups that's for sure. I used to be into it a lot more than I am now but I turned my hobby into my profession so the hobby suffered big time! ![]()

I have everything i need to set-up a draft system except a CO2 tank. They are quite tough to find in Truro. What size would you guys suggest for a single keg system? Also how long to let the beer sit after you fill the keg with you homwbrew? Thanks

A 5lb cylinder is large enough to last quite a few kegs, I think a 20lb'er is good for at least 50 full sized 50L kegs I think Brewingcentres is quite a bit cheaper to buy the bottle itself compared to Praxair or Air Liquide. Then you have to take it to one of said companies to fill it with CO2. Last time I filled my 20lb tank it was about $27 so it ends up being dirt cheap. As for the time frame it takes for carbonation that's dependent on a few things. Carbonation is a function of temperature, surface area contact and head pressure. If you have a keg in the fridge and apply 13 PSI head pressure then just leave it sit there it'd take a solid week or more. If you shake the keg it'll carbonate a lot faster, if you leave say 4" head space in the keg, turn the CO2 pressure up to about 25PSI then shake the crap out of it you can fully carbonate it in ~ 10 mins! The colder your beer is the faster it'll carbonate.

Standard unscented household bleach in a solution of 25 - 50 ppm (parts per million). No stronger or it may cause corrosion of the stainless. So that's 1 - 2 fluid oz (~25 - 50ml) in 19L or 5 US gallons. Fill it with water and add the bleach the night before you are going to fill it beer to give it an overnight soak, drain and give it a quick rinse with water just before filling it
