Default Questions About Auto Insurance

So I've had insurance now for 7 years but my mom usually always took care of everything, I just got my renewal documents today and they have all this crap on the back that I do not understand. My mom was telling me that I am paying a lot for my Third Party Liability, what is the usual amount that you would have for that? Right now, I am paying 963 dollars for 1,000,000 Third party liability. Am I being ripped off? This is so bloody frustrating when you have no idea what is going on.

Third party liability is insurance for any passengers that you have in your vehicle.

If you have an accident and it's your fault, they can sue your insurance for up to $1,000,000. If you don't carry passengers in your vehicle very often, or if you never leave "Town" and take a chance of putting your passengers in any situation that is going to be a "Serious" accident, you could consider lowering it to $500,000. The only thing is, if you are ever in a serious accident any they sustain serious injuries that are worth more than that $500,000, they could sue you personally for monies owed above that amount.

With the private insurance here in NS, you should always shop around for a better price that may be available. You never know, you could save some money. When I first started as a courier, every company I got a quote from wanted approx. $4200 a year, but I was determined and ended up finding one for $3200. That's a serious amount cheaper.

Later...

I am going to start calling around this week but I don't think I am going to get it any cheaper. When I first started looking back in April, this place was over a 1000.00 cheaper than everyone else because I get a discount.

I got $1000 off of my insurance by going with TD Canada Trust auto insurance. It's worth a call.

I only have the basics, what is legally required by law, and the $1,000,000.00 for third party. I had one accident, five years ago, and I pay $700ish a year.

I am not positive but I think when you have a new (well fairly new) car you have to have full coverage. On the old cavi I had liability and that was it. I still never did call around about car insurance....I am such a slacker.

If you borrowed the money from the bank or dealership they usually make you put full insurance on it. If you own the vehicle then you only have to put the minimum.

Ah! Well by the time I get my car paid off she'll be four years old and be considered pretty shitty so I won't really care about having full coverage then! Thanks for the info tho.
